Therapeutic Services
Empowering your journey to healing, one step at a time. Because every path to wellness deserves guidance, compassion, and care.
At Unfold Psychology, our team of clinicians have a myriad of treatment specialities, but at the core of the practice is our therapeutic services. Individual Psychotherapy, also referred to as counseling or therapy, is a collaborative treatment process where you engage with a trained professional to alleviate symptoms associated with emotional, psychological and/or behavioral complaints. Unlike oblique physical ailments such as broken bones, mental health concerns are often minimized, if not entirely neglected, by our healthcare system as being just as real, just as painful as a fractured wrist. At Unfold Psychology, we consider mental distress to be pernicious, life disrupting, and entirely manageable when it receives the appropriate attention, by a well trained mental health clinician.
The specific ‘formula’ or methods utilized in therapy varies based on the “presenting problem.” Once you have given our office a call, and scheduled a time to meet with one of our clinicians, you and your treatment provider will discuss what has been going well in your life and what could be going better. At Unfold Psychology we meet our patients where they are, which means we create a treatment program without your complete participation and consent. Depending on the severity of the symptoms, and your level of distress, your clinician will discuss the therapeutic treatment methods available. It seems like the current trend in mental health is to keep people in treatment forever; at unfold psychology, we identify the problem, clarify the goals, create a treatment plan, track symptoms, and when the goals initially set are met, we will work with you to ensure you have the tools and education to begin reducing the frequency of therapy sessions. It is important to highlight one of the most unique features of Unfold Psychology: even when the therapy visits end, the relationship does not – you are always encouraged to give your clinician a call or a text. We are always here for you!
More specifically, the virtue and value of therapy is in its ability to establish a supportive, safe, environment. It takes a very specific setting to openly explore difficult thoughts, uncomfortable feelings, examine one’s behaviors and focus on responses to life’s stressors. When you experience being part of a collaborative, non-judgemental space, this is when the therapeutic process blooms. Feeling safe and secure, your clinician will guide you towards greater self-awareness, improved emotional regulation, and the development of new coping strategies to manage stress, anxiety, and depression. Put in another way, therapy facilitates personal growth which evolves into a higher quality of life. Therapy is where you are able to explore the root causes of psychological issues rather than just find methods to alleviate unwanted symptoms.
Psychology vs. Psychiatry
In psychiatry, providers target the biological aspects of mental health disorders. For therapeutic psychology treatment practice’s, like Unfold Psychology, the focus is on the psychological and social factors, in addition to the physical. Because of this, Unfold Psychology considers all patients through a biopsychosocial frame. This is the most comprehensive approach for mental health treatment, and research has shown it leads to more sustainable long-term improvements. When therapy is combined with medication, it often enhances treatment outcomes. Medication can help stabilize mood or reduce symptoms, making it easier for patients to engage in therapy and work on underlying issues. This combination allows for a more holistic treatment plan, addressing both the biological and psychological aspects of mental health, and often leads to better overall results than either treatment alone.
