ADHD Treatment

ADHD is not a deficit of attention, but rather an abundance of it—misdirected and unfocused. With the right guidance, this abundance can be channeled into extraordinary creativity and success.”

– Dr. Edward Hallowell

At Unfold Psychology, our clinicians utilize Cogmed Brain Training as a key component in our comprehensive approach to treating ADHD. We view Cogmed as one of the most effective non-pharmacological interventions for addressing the core attention and working memory challenges associated with ADHD.

Here’s how our clinicians integrate Cogmed into ADHD treatment:

  • Personalized Assessment: Before implementing Cogmed, we conduct a thorough evaluation of each client’s specific ADHD symptoms, cognitive strengths, and weaknesses. This allows us to tailor the Cogmed program to address individual needs.
  • Targeted Intervention: We use Cogmed to specifically target working memory deficits, which are often at the root of attention problems in ADHD. By strengthening working memory, we aim to improve our clients’ ability to sustain focus, follow instructions, and manage impulses.
  • Integrated Approach: Our clinicians don’t use Cogmed in isolation. We integrate it into a holistic treatment plan that may include behavioral therapy, academic support strategies, and, when appropriate, medication management. This multi-faceted approach addresses ADHD symptoms from various angles.
  • Real-World Application: We work with our clients to translate the cognitive gains from Cogmed training into practical improvements in daily life. This might involve strategies for applying enhanced attention skills to schoolwork, job performance, or social interactions.
  • Long-Term Support: Recognizing that ADHD is a chronic condition, we provide ongoing support even after the initial Cogmed training period. This may include periodic “booster” sessions or check-ins to maintain and reinforce the cognitive gains.
  • Family Involvement: For younger clients, we involve parents in the Cogmed process, providing guidance on how to support their child’s training and reinforce improved attention skills at home.
  • Addressing Motivation: Our clinicians are trained to use Cogmed’s game-like interface to keep clients, especially children and adolescents, engaged and motivated throughout the training process.
  • Cognitive Flexibility: We use Cogmed to help improve cognitive flexibility, which can help ADHD clients adapt to changing situations and manage transitions more effectively.
  • Monitored Progress: Throughout the Cogmed training period, our clinicians closely monitor each client’s progress. We use the program’s built-in assessment tools along with feedback from clients, parents, and teachers to track improvements in attention and cognitive function.

At Unfold Psychology, we believe that Cogmed offers a unique opportunity to address the underlying cognitive deficits in ADHD, rather than just managing symptoms. By strengthening working memory and attention through Cogmed, we aim to empower our clients with ADHD to create their own meaning and purpose, enhancing their ability to concentrate on tasks that may not inherently spark their interest. This approach aligns with our philosophy of not just treating ADHD symptoms, but helping our clients develop the cognitive tools they need to thrive in all aspects of their lives.
