An unorganized application is an ignored application

At Unfold Psychology, our Executive Functioning Specialists understand the critical role that executive function skills play in the college, High School and Graduate School application process. Having spoken with hundreds of admissions officers, we have discovered the majority of applications are never even reviewed because the applicant failed to “follow the directions.” The students who seem like “shoe-in’s” for certain skills are often rejected not because they are not a good fit, but because their application didn’t meet the standards expected by the school – the expectation that their students can follow basic instructions. Following directions is just one way in which low EF can impact an applicants ‘chances.’ Executive function challenges can limit a student's ability to get into good schools in several ways:

Application Completion: Students with executive function difficulties may struggle to manage the complex, multi-step process of college applications. They might miss deadlines, overlook important details, or fail to complete all required components of the application.

Essay Quality: Poor planning and organization skills can result in rushed, disjointed, or incomplete essays that fail to effectively showcase the student’s strengths and unique qualities.

Standardized Test Performance: Difficulties with time management and attention can negatively impact standardized test scores, which are still considered by many colleges.

Extracurricular Involvement: Students may struggle to consistently participate in and excel at extracurricular activities due to challenges with time management and follow-through.

Academic Performance: Long-term executive function challenges can result in lower grades or inconsistent academic performance, which are key factors in college admissions.
