Our team of licensed therapists and psychologists is dedicated to helping individuals, couples, and families overcome life's challenges and achieve their goals. We offer a range of evidence-based treatments, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based therapy, and more. At Unfold Psychology, we believe in creating a safe and supportive environment where our clients can unfold their true potential.
Our Founder and CEO
Dr. R. Austin Heafey is a licensed clinical psychologist who works with children, adolescents, parents, and families to provide support and treatment for various social, domestic, personal, and psychological concerns. Regardless of who he is working with, his primary focus is improving self-esteem, building self-confidence and working to enrich his patients’ self-worth. The more faith a person has in their own abilities and innate uniqueness, the more they are able to engage with the world they live in, the family they belong to and the life they deserve to experience. Dr. Heafey aims to improve his patients’ quality of life.
Dr. Heafey has experience using a number of treatment modalities including, but not limited to, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Interpersonal Therapy, Developmental Theory and Logo Therapy. Only after he has met with and had a chance to listen to his clients’ specific needs, and, most importantly, gain a sense of who he is working with, does he discuss which therapeutic technique he believes would be of greatest value towards achieving their goal. Dr. Heafey is both comfortable and familiar with both short and long term treatment modalities, and welcomes input from collateral sources, or when it is indicated, to work with other clinicians as part of treatment team.

David practices psychodynamic therapy, an approach that
emphasizes psychological, relational, and spiritual growth. It is a time-tested and proven method for alleviating stress and anxiety and for developing a stronger sense of self-
contentment.
Understanding yourself, your motivations, and the influences that have shaped you is key to experiencing a more fulfilling life. Therapy with David is a process originating in yourself and expressed through your collaboration; you will work through some of the old obstacles and outdated narratives that keep you from realizing your full potential. Your story isn’t set in
stone; now’s the time to carve a new path.
During the pandemic, David worked as a counselor on the
Marin County suicide prevention and grief hotlines, and as an associate therapist at a non-profit clinic in North Hollywood.
He holds a master’s degree in clinical psychology from Antioch University, Los Angeles.
Dr. Hazzard specializes in the treatment of existential concerns, post-traumatic conditions, and grief. He works with adults and older adolescents from all walks of life, and has extensive
experience working with immigrants, adults who are transitioning through middle age, emerging young professionals, artists, and people who experience various forms of psychotic process. His approach, although tailored to each individual patient, is generally reflective, spacious, insight- oriented, emotionally resonant, and longer-term in nature. More broadly, Dr. Hazzard views therapy as a healing relationship in which patients develop the insight necessary to engage with
life in a manner that is liberated, authentic, and fulfilling. In our present era, in which technology encroaches on so many aspects of our daily lives, Dr. Hazzard also considers therapy to be a
modality that helps us retain a sense of our basic humanity.
Dr. Hazzard holds a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree awarded by The California Institute of Integral Studies, though he began training as a therapist long ago in an art therapy master’s
degree program. During both his master’s and doctoral studies, Dr. Hazzard received extensive training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Most recently, he received advanced post-licensure training in existential psychoanalysis. Dr. Hazzard’s work is informed by his ongoing study and engagement with psychoanalysis, creativity, history, and philosophy. In addition to providing therapy, Dr. Hazzard is also passionate about teaching and mentorship. He provides clinical supervision to doctoral trainees, and he teaches psychoanalytic theory and therapy at training clinics in the San Franciso Bay Area.
