Our Founder and CEO

Dr. R. Austin Heafey, PsyD, MA, MA

Dr. R. Austin Heafey is a licensed clinical psychologist who works with children, adolescents, parents, and families to provide support and treatment for various social, domestic, personal, and psychological concerns. Regardless of who he is working with, his primary focus is improving self-esteem, building self-confidence and working to enrich his patients’ self-worth. The more faith a person has in their own abilities and innate uniqueness, the more they are able to engage with the world they live in, the family they belong to and the life they deserve to experience. Dr. Heafey aims to improve his patients’ quality of life.

Dr. Heafey has experience using a number of treatment modalities including, but not limited to, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Interpersonal Therapy, Developmental Theory and Logo Therapy. Only after he has met with and had a chance to listen to his clients’ specific needs, and, most importantly, gain a sense of who he is working with, does he discuss which therapeutic technique he believes would be of greatest value towards achieving their goal. Dr. Heafey is both comfortable and familiar with both short and long term treatment modalities, and welcomes input from collateral sources, or when it is indicated, to work with other clinicians as part of treatment team.

Dr. Rachel Eelkema Kagan, MA, MD, APCC

I am an Existential Therapist with an evidence-based approach. I specialize in helping clients find meaning and purpose when existence seems hopeless or empty. Demoralization seems endemic these days. You might be experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety, or even thoughts of suicide. The philosophies of Existentialism and Stoicism, along with the modern practice of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, offer an ideal approach to identifying a personally meaningful path forward.

Existential and Stoic Philosophy focus on concerns such as meaning, freedom, authenticity, isolation, death, responsibility, virtue, and ethics. The goal of Existential Therapy is to explore such topics unflinchingly and dare to create your own way to live, whatever your circumstances.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is an evidence-based therapeutic approach. It centers on the idea of control, working to help an individual find a sense of balance and power in their life through
exploration of mind-centered concepts such as perspective, emotional regulation, self-awareness, cognitive restructuring, perceptions, and mindfulness.

Dr. Rachel Eelkema Kagan is a graduate of the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth (MD), Saint
Mary’s University of Minnesota (MA), and Harvard University (BA).

Ashley Lynn, MS, AMFT, APCC

Ashley’s treatment philosophy is that healing begins with empowering individuals to recognize their control and strengths in life. We are all humans doing the best we can in our current circumstances. As an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT) and Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (APCC), her approach is integrative, empathetic, warm, collaborative, and inclusive. She is dedicated to providing a safe space for individuals, couples, and families to feel supported, validated, and heard throughout their therapeutic journeys.

Ashley utilizes cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, humanistic, systems, and trauma-informed treatment techniques to offer a comprehensive and highly tailored treatment to address her client’s biopsychosocial concerns.

Rachel Budnick, MA, AMFT

Rachel is an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT#138484). She addresses common mental health issues such as relationship struggles, divorce, depression, anxiety, PTSD, Trauma (acute, chronic, and complex), Bipolar disorder, ADHD, OCD, and other mood-related disorders. She works with children, teenagers, young adults, and adults struggling with general stress, overwhelms, sexuality, non-confirmative relationships/poly-versed, self-harm, communication, boundaries, life transitions and endings, eating disorders, addiction struggles, family dynamics, and conflict.

She works with therapeutic modalities such as Formative Psychology, various approaches to trauma release, and Somatic Experiencing, along with evidence-based CBT and mindfulness practices.

David Goldsmith, M.A., AMFT #145926

David practices psychodynamic therapy, an approach that
emphasizes psychological, relational, and spiritual growth. It is a time-tested and proven method for alleviating stress and anxiety and for developing a stronger sense of self-
contentment.

Understanding yourself, your motivations, and the influences that have shaped you is key to experiencing a more fulfilling life. Therapy with David is a process originating in yourself and expressed through your collaboration; you will work through some of the old obstacles and outdated narratives that keep you from realizing your full potential. Your story isn’t set in
stone; now’s the time to carve a new path.

During the pandemic, David worked as a counselor on the
Marin County suicide prevention and grief hotlines, and as an associate therapist at a non-profit clinic in North Hollywood.

He holds a master’s degree in clinical psychology from Antioch University, Los Angeles.

Dr. Hazzard, Psy.D.

Dr. Hazzard specializes in the treatment of existential concerns, post-traumatic conditions, and grief. He works with adults and older adolescents from all walks of life, and has extensive
experience working with immigrants, adults who are transitioning through middle age, emerging young professionals, artists, and people who experience various forms of psychotic process. His approach, although tailored to each individual patient, is generally reflective, spacious, insight- oriented, emotionally resonant, and longer-term in nature. More broadly, Dr. Hazzard views therapy as a healing relationship in which patients develop the insight necessary to engage with
life in a manner that is liberated, authentic, and fulfilling. In our present era, in which technology encroaches on so many aspects of our daily lives, Dr. Hazzard also considers therapy to be a
modality that helps us retain a sense of our basic humanity.

Dr. Hazzard holds a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree awarded by The California Institute of Integral Studies, though he began training as a therapist long ago in an art therapy master’s
degree program. During both his master’s and doctoral studies, Dr. Hazzard received extensive training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Most recently, he received advanced post-licensure training in existential psychoanalysis. Dr. Hazzard’s work is informed by his ongoing study and engagement with psychoanalysis, creativity, history, and philosophy. In addition to providing therapy, Dr. Hazzard is also passionate about teaching and mentorship. He provides clinical supervision to doctoral trainees, and he teaches psychoanalytic theory and therapy at training clinics in the San Franciso Bay Area.
